Deadly illustrations
I infuse Nature, science, History, folklore, works of horror and my curiosity about everything into illustrations that are both odes to the wild and interpretations of human imagination.
Birds rub shoulders with skeletons, flowers grow on ruins, monsters have a story to tell in images sometimes approaching memento mori or vanitas.

Who is Matanor?
I am a French illustrator living in Finland since 2020. My passion for Nature and folklore goes back to my childhood.
It was after a curriculum in Illustration and Graphic Design (yes, although these two fields are totally different, I am also a Graphic Designer) and another in Video Games, that I settled in Northern Europe. I could talk about Finland for hours, but let's summarize by emphasizing that the daily omnipresence of green spaces, wild animals and pagan folklore continues to fuel my personal curiosity as much as my art.
In addition to the visual arts, I also have an affinity with writing, which I have always practiced.

My work
Textured paper and inking pens are my favorite tools. I also use a graphic tablet, mainly for retouching scanned illustrations, coloring them and creating short comic strips to dialogue with my small community.
Despite a neurological condition called "essential tremors", I took a liking in giving pride of place to lines rather than colors, to drawn details rather than painted ones.
This unique style, at the same time clean and very slightly shaky, evolves while remaining timeless.
